What is Bourbon and Bluegrass Century Ride
The Bourbon & Bluegrass Century, presented by Bicycle Owensboro will be August 4, 2018. Celebrating our third year, the ride benefits Dream Riders of Kentucky, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 2003 that offers equine assisted activities and therapies to individuals of all ages who have special needs. Along with the full and metric centuries, there is also available a 33-mile ride. Our rides offer a few rolling hills and many miles of flat, rural roads through scenic western Kentucky including spectacular views of the Ohio and Green Rivers. On Friday evening, join us for a mixer/packet pickup as well as distillery tours and bourbon tastings, if you wish, at O. Z. Tyler Distillery where the ride will begin and end on Saturday. O. Z. Tyler (https://oztylerdistillery.com/) is continuing the tradition of distilling in Owensboro that began in 1885 and are proud members of the Kentucky Distiller’s Association and a Heritage member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. After the mixer, Owensboro has lots of entertainment on the waterfront which include Friday After 5 (a free, fun, family-friendly concert and street fair festival)
Dream Riders of Kentucky
Dream Riders of Kentucky has been providing therapeutic horseback riding services to disabled children and adults since 2003.
What started with a small circle of small friends interested in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with physical or mental disabilities through equine assisted activities has grown steadily into a non-profit organization serving over 300 individuals annually in Daviess and surrounding counties, in both Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Their mission is to provide those with physical, mental and emotional needs an opportunity to experience the joy of horseback riding, a bonding experience with horses.
This year's Bourbon & Bluegrass Century is in honor of Mike Clark
Mike is a man of many hats, all equally beneficial and significant to the community of Owensboro and its citizens. Professionally, Mike served as an educator and principal for over 47 years in public and parochial school systems. In his retirement, Mike serves on the Daviess County Public Schools Board of Directors, currently filling the position of Board Chairman.
In 2003, Mike was one of the founding members of Dream Riders of Kentucky; an equine assisted therapy program for individuals of all ages with disabilities. This organization was founded through the inspiration of Mike’s daughters, Megan and Erin, who found riding to be not only fun, but beneficial.
A member of Bicycle Owensboro, Mike has been pivotal in the creation of the Bourbon and Bluegrass Century Ride, now in it’s 3rd year. This event has become a significant fundraising event that has enabled the agency to expand its capabilities.
As one of eleven siblings, Mike learned at a young age, and is often heard saying, ‘if you want to be happy, do something that makes other people happy’. This epitomizes the life Mike leads and the example he sets for those fortunate enough to work alongside of him.
